*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loch Insh, an expansion of the River Spey within the Cairngorms National Park, offers a beautiful but consistently cool wild swimming environment. The water temperature is subject to the dramatic Highland seasons. In the warmer summer months, typically July and August, the water can reach its maximum, peaking at around 18 to 20∘C (64 to 68∘F), especially in the shallower areas. However, throughout the rest of the year, temperatures drop sharply, with winter readings often falling to single digits, around 3 to 8∘C (37 to 46∘F), and the loch's edges sometimes freezing over.
Swimming in Loch Insh is popular and widely permitted under Scotland's access rights, particularly near the Loch Insh Outdoor Centre which hosts organised dips and provides facilities. The loch offers a relatively sheltered option compared to the swift-flowing River Spey, but cold water shock remains a significant risk, requiring swimmers to acclimatise slowly and be aware of their limits. Visitors to the area can also explore the historic Ruthven Barracks, enjoy the wildlife at the Highland Wildlife Park, or walk and cycle the surrounding forests of the Cairngorms.
