The River Ness flows directly through Inverness, carrying the consistently cold waters from the deep Loch Ness to the sea. The temperature of the river water remains low all year, rarely exceeding a summer peak of about 12∘C (54∘F), with surface temperatures potentially dipping as low as 5∘C to 8∘C (41∘F to 46∘F) during the colder months. This constant chill makes the water inhospitable for casual bathing.
Recreational swimming in the River Ness is strongly discouraged due to the extreme cold, which poses a significant and immediate risk of cold water shock and hypothermia, even on warm days. Additionally, the fast-moving currents, particularly after periods of heavy rain, can be dangerous.
