Bristol, a vibrant city in southwest England, lies near the tidal lower reaches of the River Severn, where the river broadens dramatically before flowing into the Bristol Channel. Because this stretch is heavily influenced by tides from the Atlantic Ocean, the water temperature and conditions differ from the calmer upper river. In winter, the Severn near Bristol averages around 6–8°C (43–46°F), rising gradually to 11–13°C (52–55°F) in spring. During the warmest months, July and August, surface temperatures can reach 17–19°C (63–66°F), but the powerful tidal currents and mixing of salt and freshwater keep the water feeling cooler than in inland sections.
