Location & Local Information
Niš, one of the largest cities in southern Serbia, lies on the banks of the Nišava River, which flows through a broad valley surrounded by hills. The river’s water temperature changes significantly with the seasons due to the region’s continental climate. In spring, the Nišava typically has temperatures between 10 and 15 °C, while in summer it warms to 20–25 °C, occasionally reaching 26 °C during hot spells. In autumn, the temperature gradually cools to around 14–18 °C, and in winter it can drop below 5 °C, with some shallow sections partially freezing. The river’s flow is moderate, with faster currents after heavy rain.
Swimming in the Nišava near Niš is possible but not officially organized. During the warmest months, especially in July and August, locals sometimes swim or cool off in calmer and shallower areas. However, because of varying depth, stronger currents, and changes in water quality, swimming is recommended only in safe, known sections. The river is mainly used for recreation, fishing, and walking along its banks rather than for regular bathing. Despite that, the Nišava adds a refreshing natural element to the city’s summer landscape.
