Trstenik, a town in Central Serbia, is located directly on the West Morava River (Zapadna Morava). While the river's banks are occasionally used by locals for relaxation, formal, supervised swimming opportunities in the river itself are limited. Swimming is generally permitted under Serbian public access rights to waterways, but it is not officially regulated or monitored for bathing safety and water quality, meaning swimmers enter the river at their own risk. The river's flow can be quite strong, especially outside the dry summer months.
The West Morava River near Trstenik features a classic continental seasonal water temperature cycle. In the cold winter months, from approximately December to February, the river temperature is very low, typically ranging from 0∘C to 4∘C, with marginal ice formation along the quieter banks. The river becomes minimally warm enough for casual bathing only during the height of summer, specifically July and August. In this peak period, the surface temperature can rise to a range of 19∘C to 22∘C, providing a refreshing option for locals, though it remains relatively cool.
