** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Albufeira da Barragem do Vilar, in the Guarda district of inland Portugal, is a freshwater reservoir whose temperatures vary markedly through the year. Surface waters in winter typically sit around 4–10 °C (39–50 °F), rising in spring to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) as air temperatures warm. In the height of summer the surface can reach about 20–26 °C (68–79 °F), while autumn sees a cooling to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). These figures are approximate and local conditions such as depth, inflows and wind will cause variability; deeper layers remain significantly colder year-round and stratification can produce abrupt temperature changes below the surface.
Swimming opportunities at the Vilar reservoir depend on management and safety considerations rather than consistent recreational infrastructure. Many reservoirs in Portugal are managed for water supply, irrigation or flood control, and as a result bathing may be discouraged or subject to local restrictions to protect water quality and reduce risks from changing water levels, submerged hazards and currents. Informal summer bathing can occur where access is safe and water quality is acceptable, but visitors should follow posted signs and local guidance because permissions and conditions can change.
