*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kardzhali (Bulgarian: Кърджали) sits on the shores of the Kardzhali Reservoir, a large impounded section of the Arda River that warms and cools with the seasons. Surface water temperatures typically range from near freezing in winter—about 0–4 °C (32–39 °F)—to cooler spring values of roughly 6–16 °C (43–61 °F). In summer, when air temperatures are highest, the shallow surface layer commonly reaches about 20–27 °C (68–81 °F) on warm days, though deeper water remains noticeably cooler. During autumn the surface generally falls back into the 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) band as the reservoir loses heat and inflows change. Local weather, wind, depth and inflow from upstream reservoirs affect these figures, so temperatures can vary from year to year.
Swimming in the Kardzhali Reservoir is a common recreational activity in summer and is generally permitted in open areas away from navigation channels and the dam; there are informal bathing spots and small beaches used by residents and visitors. However, there are no universal lifeguard provisions and some zones near the dam, intakes or boat traffic are unsafe or restricted, while water quality and underwater hazards vary by location and season. For safe swimming, people should choose established bathing areas, heed local signs and guidance, and be mindful of cold deeper water and changing currents.
