*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Washington, a town in Tyne and Wear, is set near the middle stretch of the River Wear, where the water flows calmly between Chester-le-Street and Sunderland. The river’s temperature here reflects the moderate but cool climate of northeast England, changing steadily throughout the year. In winter, the Wear typically measures between 3 and 5°C (37–41°F), remaining cold and clear from upland rainfall. By spring, it begins to warm to around 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the water can reach 15–17°C (59–63°F) in sheltered sections, making it comfortable for outdoor activities. As autumn approaches, temperatures fall again to about 9–11°C (48–52°F), maintaining a steady and refreshing quality through most of the year.
Swimming in the River Wear near Washington is possible but should be done with care. The current is usually gentle in dry weather, though it can strengthen quickly after rainfall. The water quality has improved over recent decades, allowing for safe wild swimming in calmer areas during summer. Many residents, however, prefer riverside walks, kayaking, or fishing along the banks. The surrounding area includes scenic paths through the Wear Valley, Washington Wetland Centre, and nearby heritage attractions such as Lumley Castle and the historic centre of Durham.
