Sunderland, a coastal city in northeast England, lies where the River Wear meets the North Sea, creating a wide tidal estuary that reflects both inland and maritime influences. The river’s temperature here changes steadily with the seasons and the movement of the tides. In winter, the Wear typically remains between 4 and 6°C (39–43°F), staying cold and brackish. By spring, it gradually warms to around 8–11°C (46–52°F). Swimming in the River Wear at Sunderland is not generally recommended due to strong tidal currents, boat traffic, and shifting water conditions near the estuary.
