*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Inny flows through Counties Longford and Westmeath in central Ireland before entering Lough Ree, part of the River Shannon system. Its water temperature reflects the mild inland climate of the Irish Midlands. In winter, the Inny typically stays around 4–6°C (39–43°F), while in summer it warms to about 15–18°C (59–64°F). During calm, sunny days in July or August, sheltered bends or shallow stretches may briefly reach 19°C (66°F), though cooler layers persist below the surface. The moderate seasonal variation makes the Inny suitable for outdoor recreation, with swimming most comfortable from late May to early September when air and water temperatures are mildest.
Swimming in the River Inny is permitted, though it is more commonly used for fishing and boating. The water quality in many areas is good, but swimmers should be cautious of varying depths and stronger currents after heavy rain. Local residents and visitors sometimes swim in calm sections near Ballymahon and Abbeyshrule, where access is easy and the flow is gentle. Wetsuits are recommended outside midsummer, as the water cools quickly below the surface. The surrounding area offers pleasant countryside walks, historic abbeys, and access to the Royal Canal Greenway, making the Inny Valley a quiet and scenic part of inland Ireland.
