*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Barrow, flowing through Counties Laois, Carlow, Kilkenny, Kildare, and Wexford before joining the River Suir near Waterford Harbour, is Ireland’s second-longest river. Its water temperature changes moderately with the seasons, reflecting the mild inland climate and steady flow. In winter, average temperatures are around 4–6°C (39–43°F), while during summer they typically reach 15–18°C (59–64°F). On warm, calm days in July or August, sheltered sections may rise to about 19°C (66°F), though the deeper stretches stay cooler. Because of its slow-moving character in many areas, the Barrow warms slightly faster than larger rivers like the Shannon, making it pleasant for outdoor activity in late spring and summer.
Swimming in the River Barrow is allowed and enjoyed in several places, particularly around Graiguenamanagh, St. Mullins, and Carlow town, where the water is clean and access points are easy. Swimmers are advised to stay clear of weirs and locks, as these can create strong undercurrents. During the warmer months, locals and visitors often take short swims or join open-water groups, with wetsuits recommended outside high summer. The Barrow Way walking trail runs along the riverbank, providing scenic routes for walkers and cyclists. Historic towns, stone bridges, and quiet woodland stretches make the River Barrow a peaceful destination for both swimming and exploration.
