*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The River Moy flows through Counties Mayo and Sligo in western Ireland before entering the Atlantic Ocean at Ballina. Its water temperature reflects the cool, maritime climate of the west coast. In winter, the river typically remains between 4–6°C (39–43°F), while in summer it warms to around 14–17°C (57–63°F). On calm, sunny days in July or August, sheltered areas and shallow stretches can briefly reach 18°C (64°F), though the deeper and faster-flowing sections stay cooler. Because of these fresh but moderate temperatures, the most suitable time for swimming is from late June to early September, when both the air and water offer the mildest conditions.
Swimming is allowed in the River Moy, though it is better known for its salmon fishing than for bathing. The river’s clean waters and scenic banks attract occasional swimmers and open-water enthusiasts, particularly near calmer stretches outside Ballina. As with all Irish rivers, caution is advised, especially after rain when currents can strengthen. Wetsuits are often worn to stay comfortable in the cool water. Beyond swimming, the Moy Valley is rich in nature and heritage, offering walking routes, angling, and views of the Ox Mountains. Nearby attractions include Ballina’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the beautiful beaches of Enniscrone along the Atlantic coast.
