*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Carlow, a historic town in southeast Ireland, is built along the River Barrow, one of the country’s major waterways. The river’s temperature reflects the mild, inland climate of the Irish Midlands. In winter, the Barrow near Carlow generally stays around 4–7°C (39–45°F), while in summer it warms to about 15–18°C (59–64°F). During calm, sunny days in July or August, the surface water may briefly reach 19°C (66°F), though cooler layers persist below the surface. These moderate temperatures make the Barrow refreshing rather than warm, with the most comfortable swimming conditions usually found between June and early September, when both air and water are mildest.
Swimming in the River Barrow around Carlow is permitted and increasingly popular in recent years, especially along calm, accessible stretches of the river. Local swimmers and open-water enthusiasts use the quieter sections near Carlow town and Graiguecullen, though caution is always advised because of currents and boat traffic. The river also supports kayaking, paddleboarding, and scenic walking along the Barrow Way trail. Wetsuits are recommended outside midsummer, as the water cools quickly in deeper parts. Beyond the river, Carlow offers attractions such as Carlow Castle, the Visual arts centre, and the surrounding countryside, which blends natural beauty with a strong sense of history and community.
