** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Rio Zêzere in the Castelo Branco District typically shows pronounced seasonal variation in water temperature. In winter months the river water often ranges from about 6–10 °C (43–50 °F), which is brisk and can present a risk of cold-water shock. Spring temperatures usually rise to roughly 8–15 °C (46–59 °F) as snowmelt and rainfall feed the river. During summer, shallower stretches and slower-moving pools warm most, commonly reaching 18–25 °C (64–77 °F) and occasionally 26–28 °C (79–82 °F) during prolonged heat waves. Autumn cooling tends to bring temperatures back to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) as flows increase again.
Swimming in the Zêzere is possible in many accessible sections, particularly where local authorities or communities maintain informal beaches or designated bathing areas with adequate water quality. However, swimming is not universally permitted or safe along the whole river: sudden currents, submerged hazards, and regulated dam releases can make some stretches dangerous, and occasional declines in water quality may lead to temporary restrictions. Visitors should follow local signage, check for monitored bathing zones, and be mindful of seasonal temperature-related risks such as hypothermia in cooler months and reduced buoyancy in colder water.
