The Lom River (река Лом) in northwestern Bulgaria, joining the Danube at the town of Lom, shows typical temperate-river seasonal temperature behavior. In winter the water is cold, commonly around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F). Spring brings a steady rise as snowmelt and warming air push temperatures into roughly 4–12 °C (39–54 °F). Summer sees the warmest conditions, especially in shallow stretches and slow-moving backwaters, with typical surface temperatures in the neighborhood of 18–25 °C (64–77 °F). In autumn the river cools again to about 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) as air temperatures fall and flow increases. Local conditions such as depth, shading, recent weather and inflows can shift these ranges by several degrees.
Swimming along the Lom is possible in some places, but it is not universally recommended or officially sanctioned throughout the urban and port sections. Factors limiting safe bathing include strong currents in the main channel, boat and commercial traffic near the confluence with the Danube, variable water quality and lack of lifeguards or marked bathing areas.
