*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Watchaug Pond in southern Rhode Island typically follows the seasonal rhythms of New England ponds. Surface water temperatures in winter hover around freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), with ice cover common during the coldest stretches. In spring the pond usually warms into the 40–60°F range (4–16°C) as air temperatures rise and snowmelt runs off. Peak summer surface temperatures are commonly in the upper 60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit, about 20–26°C, and on warm, calm days can approach the mid-to-high 70s (24–26°C). By fall the surface cools back through the 50s–60s°F (10–16°C) as stratification breaks down and the whole water column becomes more uniform.
Swimming is generally possible in the warmer months when surface temperatures are comfortable, but whether it is allowed or advisable depends on local rules and conditions. Many small ponds do not have lifeguarded beaches, and wildlife-management or water-quality advisories can impose seasonal limits to protect habitat or public health. Cold, deeper water and rapid temperature changes also present a cold-shock risk outside midsummer. In winter, ice makes swimming unsafe. Visitors should observe posted signage, heed any health advisories, and use caution because temperature and safety conditions can change quickly.
