** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Wallum Lake, a small freshwater lake on the Massachusetts–Rhode Island border, experiences pronounced seasonal shifts in water temperature typical of New England inland waters. In spring the surface usually warms from roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as ice melts and air temperatures rise. By summer, surface readings commonly reach about 65–80°F (18–27°C) on warm afternoons, making the upper water column most comfortable for swimming. Early fall sees cooling back toward roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) as nights cool, and in winter the lake approaches freezing, with surface temperatures often near 32–40°F (0–4°C) and ice forming on sheltered bays. Deeper water remains cooler year-round, so thermal stratification can mean a noticeable drop in temperature a few feet below the surface during summer.
Swimming is typically possible in areas where public access and signs designate it as allowed, and many local visitors swim during the warmest weeks of summer when both temperature and conditions are favorable. However, whether swimming is recommended depends on local rules, water quality monitoring, boat traffic, underwater hazards, and the absence of lifeguards; cold spring and fall water, submerged vegetation, or thin winter ice make swimming unsafe outside of appropriate seasons and supervised locations. Always follow posted guidance and exercise caution.
