** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Van Sciver Lake, like many small inland lakes in Pennsylvania, experiences pronounced seasonal shifts in surface water temperature. In winter the surface typically approaches freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), and may develop ice cover in cold spells. Spring warming brings surface temperatures into the 40–60°F range (4–16°C) as the lake thermally mixes. Summer is when the warmest surface temperatures occur, commonly about 68–78°F (20–26°C) and occasionally topping 75–80°F (24–27°C) on heat waves; deeper water remains noticeably cooler. By autumn the surface cools again to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) as the lake returns toward winter stratification.
Whether swimming is allowed at Van Sciver Lake depends on local ownership and posted regulations; many small Pennsylvania lakes do not permit open swimming unless a specific area is designated and supervised. Restrictions are often in place because of safety concerns (no lifeguards, submerged hazards, and variable depths), water-quality considerations, and private or municipal management policies. If swimming is permitted it is usually recommended only in designated zones during warmer months when surface temperatures are comfortable and water quality has been tested. Visitors should consult local signage or the managing authority for current rules, advisories, and seasonal conditions before entering the water.
