*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Megunticook Lake in mid-coast Maine experiences marked seasonal shifts in water temperature. In spring (April–June) surface readings commonly climb from about 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt and cool air still influence the lake. Peak summer temperatures (July–August) typically reach the warmest values, often ranging from roughly 65–75°F (18–24°C) in open water and occasionally into the upper 70s°F (≈25°C) in shallow, sheltered coves on hot afternoons. By early fall (September–October) the surface cools again to about 50–65°F (10–18°C) as air temperatures drop. In winter the lake approaches freezing, with surface values near 32–39°F (0–4°C) and often develops ice cover that persists until thaw.
Swimming is commonly practiced in the warmer months when surface temperatures are comfortably in the mid-60s to mid-70s°F (around 18–24°C), and public access points or private shorelines permit it. However, swimming is not advisable year-round: cold spring or fall water poses risks of cold-water shock and hypothermia, and winter ice makes open-water swimming unsafe. As with any natural body of water, local rules, beach signage, and water-quality advisories should be checked before entering, and swimmers should exercise caution regarding depth, drop-offs, and the absence of lifeguards.
