** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Hertfordshire
The Tring Reservoirs are shallow, open water bodies that show noticeable seasonal variation in temperature. In spring surface temperatures are commonly around 6–14 °C (43–57 °F), rising in summer to roughly 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) on warmer days. Autumn typically brings cooling to about 8–14 °C (46–57 °F), while winter surface readings often sit between 4–8 °C (39–46 °F). Because the reservoirs are relatively shallow and exposed, they can warm quickly on sunny spells but also lose heat fast overnight; deeper areas and shaded sections remain substantially colder, so surface figures can be misleading for swimmers.
Swimming at Tring Reservoirs is generally not officially promoted and is often discouraged for safety and water‑supply reasons; there are no lifeguards and signage may warn against entry. As a result, any wild swimming tends to be informal and undertaken at one’s own risk, with cold shock and underwater hazards cited as common concerns. The area remains attractive for visitors for other reasons, including the Natural History Museum at Tring, waterside birdwatching, the adjacent Grand Union Canal and towpath walks, and the nearby Ashridge Estate for longer countryside rambles.
