** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Strangford Lough, located on the eastern coast of County Down, is a large tidal inlet connected to the Irish Sea and known for its mix of saltwater and freshwater influences. The lough’s water temperature varies with the seasons and tides, typically staying cooler than inland lakes. In winter, temperatures usually range from 6–8 °C (43–46 °F), rising slowly through spring to about 10–12 °C (50–54 °F). During summer, surface waters can warm to around 15–18 °C (59–64 °F), especially in sheltered bays, while autumn sees a gradual decline back toward 10 °C (50 °F). The tidal exchange helps maintain good water quality, though the currents can be strong near the narrows.
Swimming in Strangford Lough is generally allowed and enjoyed in calmer areas, particularly around sandy coves and small beaches such as those near Whiterock, Killyleagh, and Ballydorn. The open-water swimming community often uses the lough during summer, but swimmers must pay attention to tides and local advice due to fast-moving channels. Wetsuits are recommended outside the warmest months. Beyond swimming, the area is famous for kayaking, sailing, and wildlife watching, with seals and seabirds commonly seen. Nearby attractions include the charming village of Strangford, Mount Stewart House and Gardens, and the scenic coastal drive toward Portaferry.
