Ben Crom Reservoir, nestled high in the Mourne Mountains of County Down, Northern Ireland, is an integral part of the region's drinking water supply scheme. Due to its altitude and depth, the water maintains a very low and dangerously consistent temperature throughout the year. Even in the warmest summer months, the water temperature rarely exceeds 10∘C to 12∘C (50∘F to 54∘F), and can drop as low as 4∘C to 7∘C (39∘F to 45∘F) in winter.
Swimming and other water-based activities are strictly prohibited in Ben Crom Reservoir by Northern Ireland Water. This ban is in place to save lives, as the cold water can induce fatal cold-water shock within minutes, regardless of air temperature. Furthermore, the operational nature of the reservoir means there are hidden hazards such as machinery and strong, unpredictable currents caused by water abstraction.
