** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#County Durham
Selset Reservoir in County Durham sits high in Upper Teesdale and typically has cool, year‑round water. Surface temperatures in winter commonly hover around 2–6 °C (36–43 °F), rising through spring to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). In summer the reservoir often warms to about 14–20 °C (57–68 °F) on warmer spells, while autumn sees a steady drop to around 8–12 °C (46–54 °F). Being an upland waterbody, Selset’s surface temperature can change quickly with weather and usually remains noticeably cooler than lowland lakes and reservoirs.
Swimming at Selset is not formally supervised and the reservoir is part of a working water supply, so bathing is generally discouraged by the water company and local authorities because of cold‑water shock risk, submerged hazards, sudden depth changes and the absence of lifeguards. Wild swimmers do visit, but anyone entering the water should be experienced, wear appropriate thermal protection and check local guidance. The surrounding area is popular for walking, cycling and fishing, with Upper Teesdale scenery, High Force waterfall and a network of Pennine footpaths and rural villages nearby.
