** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#County Durham
Waskerley Reservoir, set high on the moorland of County Durham, is characteristically cold through much of the year. Typical surface temperatures range from around 2–6 °C (36–43 °F) in winter to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in spring. In summer the water can warm to about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), occasionally reaching up to 18–20 °C (64–68 °F) during prolonged warm spells, and autumn sees a decline back toward spring values. These figures are approximate and vary with weather, depth and wind exposure.
Swimming at Waskerley is generally discouraged and there are no formal, supervised bathing facilities. Restrictions reflect safety concerns such as cold-water shock, hidden underwater hazards and the reservoir’s role in water supply and management rather than temperature alone. As a result, any wild swimming would be unofficial and at the swimmer’s own risk. The area remains attractive for visitors: the Waskerley Way provides walking and cycling along old railway routes, while nearby moorland, Derwent Reservoir and other Durham attractions offer scenic routes and historical sites for day trips.
