*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#County Durham
Hisehope Reservoir sits high in County Durham and stays relatively cold through the year. Typical surface temperatures range from about 1–4 °C (34–39 °F) in winter, warming to roughly 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in spring and autumn, and reaching perhaps 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) on warmer summer days. Because it is an upland drinking-water reservoir, thermals and stratification mean deeper water will be several degrees colder than the surface even in summer, so swimmers are likely to encounter brisk conditions year-round.
Swimming at Hisehope is generally discouraged or not permitted because the reservoir is part of the public water supply and there are safety risks such as cold shock, hidden currents and poor access for rescue. People interested in open-water swimming usually choose supervised lidos or popular wild-swim sites elsewhere. The area is nonetheless attractive for visitors: there are upland walks on Muggleswick Common, scenic views within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and nearby reservoirs and towns offering trails, wildlife watching and local heritage in Weardale and Stanhope.
