Peninsula Lake, located near Huntsville in the Muskoka region of Ontario, is a moderately deep freshwater lake connected to Fairy Lake and Mary Lake through the Muskoka River system. Its water temperature varies considerably through the seasons due to the region’s cool northern climate and the lake’s mix of shallow and deeper sections. In winter, the lake surface freezes, and water temperatures stay close to 0 °C (32 °F). During spring, melting ice and inflowing cold water keep the temperature low, averaging 5–10 °C (41–50 °F). By midsummer, surface waters warm to about 20–24 °C (68–75 °F), while deeper parts remain several degrees cooler. In autumn, temperatures fall again to 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) before the lake begins to freeze once more.
Swimming in Peninsula Lake is popular from late June through early September, when surface water temperatures reach comfortable levels for recreation. The lake’s clear, clean water and gently sloping shorelines make it suitable for families and swimmers of all skill levels. Public beaches, such as those at Hidden Valley and nearby resorts, provide safe and accessible entry points. Outside the summer season, the water becomes too cold for comfortable swimming, but the lake remains attractive for kayaking, canoeing, and enjoying Muskoka’s natural beauty.
