** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Patoka Lake in southern Indiana experiences a wide range of surface temperatures through the year. In the warmest months of June through August, surface water commonly warms to roughly 75–85°F (24–29°C), providing comfortable conditions for recreational use. Late spring and early fall typically see temperatures from about 55–70°F (13–21°C) and 60–75°F (16–24°C), respectively, as the water transitions between seasons. In winter the lake cools sharply; surface temperatures often fall to near freezing up to around 32–45°F (0–7°C) depending on air temperatures and wind, and deeper water remains colder. Local conditions such as recent weather, depth, and inflows can shift these ranges from year to year.
Swimming at Patoka Lake is generally allowed in designated recreation areas and at managed beaches, where authorities post rules and monitor conditions for safety and water quality. During the warm season, these areas are the primary spots for swimmers because they are set aside away from heavy boat traffic and may have periodic testing for bacteria. However, swimming can be restricted or discouraged when advisories are issued, after heavy rains, or in the colder months when hypothermia becomes a significant risk; even in fall and spring, water that feels brisk can be hazardous. Visitors should follow posted signs and local guidance before entering the water.
