** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Monroe Lake, a large reservoir in southern Indiana, experiences notable seasonal shifts in surface water temperature. In spring the surface generally warms from roughly 40–65°F (4–18°C) as runoff and air temperatures rise. Peak summer conditions commonly bring the warmest water, with surface temperatures typically in the 70–85°F range (21–29°C), making the lake most comfortable for swimming. Early fall usually sees a gradual cooling to about 60–75°F (16–24°C) before late fall and winter drop surface temperatures into the 32–45°F range (0–7°C), when the water becomes decidedly cold and near-freezing in the coldest periods.
Swimming is permitted at Monroe Lake in designated recreational areas because the reservoir is managed for public recreation, but conditions and rules vary by site. Designated beaches or swim zones are established to separate swimmers from boat traffic and to account for changing water levels; lifeguard coverage is not guaranteed at all locations, so many spots are swim-at-your-own-risk. Water temperature, boat traffic, currents near inlets and sudden drop-offs can affect safety, and occasional advisories or temporary closures may be issued for water-quality or safety reasons, so checking current local guidance before swimming is advisable.
