*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Shell Lake in northwestern Wisconsin experiences pronounced seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In winter the lake typically freezes and surface temperatures sit at or just above 32°F (0°C) under ice cover. Spring thaw brings a gradual rise, with surface readings often in the 40–55°F range (4–13°C) as the water mixes and warms. Peak summer temperatures usually occur from July into August, when surface waters commonly reach about 70–80°F (21–27°C) on warm years, sometimes briefly topping the low 80s°F (~28°C) during heat spells. By early fall the surface cools back down, often falling into the 50–65°F band (10–18°C) as the lake returns toward turnover and winter conditions.
Swimming in Shell Lake is generally allowed and frequently enjoyed in the warm months because summer surface temperatures reach comfortable recreational levels and there are public access points and beaches for swimmers. That said, conditions vary by season and location: cold spring and autumn waters can increase the risk of hypothermia, and winter ice prevents normal swimming. Water-quality advisories, beach closures, weather, and local safety rules should be checked before entering the water; lifeguarding and facilities differ by site, so swimmers should exercise usual precautions.
