** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Lake Reno’s water temperature follows a familiar Midwestern pattern, with cool springs, warm summers and ice-covered winters. Typical spring surface readings climb from about 40–60°F (4–15°C) as air temperatures moderate, while peak summer surface temperatures commonly reach roughly 70–78°F (21–26°C) on warm, calm days in shallow areas. By early fall the surface usually falls back to around 45–60°F (7–15°C) as cooling nights set in. In winter the surface drops to freezing at or below 32°F (0°C) and the lake commonly develops ice cover, making open-water swimming impractical and unsafe.

Swimming is generally permitted at Lake Reno where public access points or informal beaches exist, but availability depends on local regulations, posted advisories and water quality. During summer months people often swim when temperatures are in the 70s°F (low- to mid-20s °C), but swimmers should be aware there may be no lifeguards and conditions can change with wind, depth and underwater hazards. In spring and fall, cooler water increases the risk of cold-water shock, and in winter ice and low temperatures preclude normal swimming. Always check local signage and health advisories before entering the water.
