** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Osakis experiences pronounced seasonal swings in water temperature typical of central Minnesota lakes. In late winter the surface is usually at or near freezing around 32°F (0°C), with deeper water remaining slightly warmer, often in the mid-30s to upper 30s °F (1–4°C). During spring the lake warms from the low 30s to roughly the upper 40s and 50s °F (8–15°C) as ice melts and the water mixes. Summer surface temperatures commonly reach the high 60s to upper 70s °F (20–26°C), and on warm, calm days can approach or exceed 80°F (27°C) in shallow bays, while deeper waters stay much cooler. In fall the surface cools back through the 50s and 40s °F (10–5°C) before refreezing.
Swimming in Lake Osakis is generally permitted and is a popular summer activity where public access sites and beaches exist, because summer surface temperatures are often comfortable for recreation. However, seasonal considerations affect safety and access: cold water in spring and fall increases risk of cold shock and hypothermia, and winter conditions require ice safety expertise. Algal blooms or elevated bacterial counts following heavy rains can prompt short-term advisories that limit swimming, so users typically follow local health notices and posted guidance when planning to swim.
