Lake Piru is a deep foothill reservoir and its water temperatures vary seasonally and with depth. Surface temperatures in winter typically sit around 50–60°F (10–15.5°C), warming through spring to roughly 55–65°F (13–18°C). In summer the surface can rise to about 65–80°F (18–27°C), with early fall commonly in the 60–75°F (16–24°C) range. Even when the surface is warm, deeper water remains considerably colder—often in the 40s–50s°F (4–13°C)—so thermal stratification and cold layers are common. Wind, recent rain, reservoir releases and year-to-year weather patterns all influence these figures.
Swimming at Lake Piru is not promoted by managers and there are no formal, lifeguarded swim beaches; while people do enter the water, swimming is often discouraged or restricted at times for safety and water-quality reasons.
