** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Cachuma is a man-made reservoir in Santa Barbara County whose surface water temperature changes with the seasons and depth. In winter the reservoir typically holds cooler water, often around the low to mid 50s °F (10–13 °C), while spring sees a gradual rise into the mid 50s to mid 60s °F (13–18 °C). By late summer surface temperatures commonly reach the upper 60s to high 70s °F (20–26 °C), and on warm stretches can approach 80 °F (about 27 °C). Deeper layers remain considerably colder year-round due to thermal stratification, so actual temperatures vary substantially with location and recent weather.
As a source of municipal water, Lake Cachuma does not offer general public swimming access; the reservoir is managed primarily for water supply, and restrictions are in place to protect water quality and public safety. In addition to contamination concerns, safety risks include cold, deep water, sudden drop-offs, and boat traffic, which further discourage open swimming. Recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and shoreline picnicking are available under park rules, but anyone considering entering the water should check current regulations with the managing agency because swimming is generally prohibited for the reasons noted.
