** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake James, a reservoir in western North Carolina, experiences noticeable seasonal shifts in surface water temperature. In winter the surface often ranges from about 36–50°F (2–10°C), while spring brings warming to roughly 50–68°F (10–20°C) as days lengthen. Summer surface temperatures commonly sit between about 70–82°F (21–28°C) on warm afternoons, though shallow bays can warm higher and deep channels remain noticeably cooler. In autumn the lake cools back through the 55–68°F (13–20°C) range before winter stratification breaks down. Local conditions such as recent weather, wind, inflows from streams, and depth can produce fairly rapid, localized variations in temperature; deeper water stays colder even in midsummer.
Swimming is permitted at Lake James, especially in designated recreation areas managed by Lake James State Park and at private shorelines and marina launch points, but users should follow posted rules and exercise caution. There are no widespread lifeguarded beaches across the entire shoreline, and steep drop-offs, boat traffic, and colder subsurface water can present hazards. Because surface temperatures are most comfortable from late spring through early fall, that period sees the most bathing activity; colder months are generally unsuitable for casual swimming without thermal protection. Visitors are advised to check local advisories and use life jackets where appropriate.
