** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Rhodhiss, a reservoir on the Catawba River in western North Carolina, experiences notable seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In summer months surface readings commonly range from about 75–85°F (24–29°C), making the shallows quite warm by midseason. Spring and fall are transitional, with surface temperatures typically between 50–65°F (10–18°C) in spring and 60–75°F (16–24°C) in early fall. Winter surface temperatures commonly fall into the mid 30s to low 50s °F (about 2–10°C). Temperatures can vary with depth, location and dam discharge; cold water released from deeper layers near the dam can produce much colder pockets even on otherwise warm days.
Swimming is generally allowed in Lake Rhodhiss because it is a public reservoir used for recreation, but there are important caveats. The lake has limited lifeguarded beaches and some access points or areas near the hydroelectric dam and power facilities may prohibit swimming for safety. Boating traffic, fluctuating water levels, submerged hazards and sudden cold-water currents near outflows increase risk, so swimmers should choose established access sites, obey posted rules and be mindful of hypothermia risk during cooler seasons.
