*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Kilpisjärvi, located in northwestern Lapland near the borders with Sweden and Norway, is one of Finland’s highest and coldest lakes. Surrounded by dramatic fells, including the famous Saana Fell, the lake lies over 470 meters above sea level. Because of its elevation and Arctic climate, the water remains cold even in midsummer. In spring, after the ice melts in early June, the surface temperature is around 2–5 °C (36–41 °F). By July, during the brief warm period, the water may reach 10–13 °C (50–55 °F), and in sheltered bays occasionally up to 14–15 °C (57–59 °F). By late August, the temperature falls below 8 °C (46 °F), and the lake usually begins to freeze again in October.
Swimming in Lake Kilpisjärvi is allowed but best suited for those accustomed to cold water. The lake’s clarity and purity make it ideal for short, refreshing swims during the warmest weeks of summer. Locals and adventurous visitors often take quick dips from the shores near the village of Kilpisjärvi, enjoying the invigorating sensation and stunning mountain scenery. While the low temperature limits long swims, bathing here offers a uniquely Arctic experience surrounded by Lapland’s untouched wilderness.
