** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Avernus (Italian: Lago d'Averno) is a small, shallow volcanic crater lake in the Campi Flegrei near Pozzuoli, and its water temperature reflects both its modest depth and the Mediterranean climate. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range roughly from about 8–12 °C (46–54 °F) in winter, through spring values near 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), to summer highs commonly around 20–26 °C (68–79 °F), then cooling again to roughly 13–19 °C (55–66 °F) in autumn. Because the basin is shallow and sheltered, it can warm fairly quickly in prolonged sunny spells but also cool rapidly during cold, overcast periods; local winds and groundwater inputs can further influence short-term variations.
Swimming at Lake Avernus is not a routine recreational activity and may be limited or discouraged. Factors include water quality concerns such as algal growth and organic material in a small lake, the presence of volcanic gases in the broader Campi Flegrei area, safety issues with steep or unstable banks, and the lake’s archaeological and natural value that invites protective measures. Some areas may be off-limits by local authorities, so visitors are advised to heed signage and check with municipal or park officials before considering entering the water.
