*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lahontan Reservoir (Lake Lahontan) in Nevada experiences strong seasonal variation in surface water temperature because it sits in an arid region with large daily and seasonal swings. In winter the reservoir commonly cools to near freezing, roughly 34–45°F (1–7°C). Spring temperatures typically rise into the mid‑40s to mid‑60s°F (7–18°C) as runoff and warming air increase surface warmth. Peak summer surface temperatures are most favorable for swimming, often reaching about 70–85°F (21–29°C) on warm afternoons, while autumn sees a gradual decline into the 50s to upper 60s°F (10–20°C) depending on weather and water depth. Deeper water remains colder year‑round and surface patches can vary with wind and shade.
Swimming is generally allowed at Lahontan because it is a managed recreation area that supports boating, fishing, and water play, but it is subject to posted rules and seasonal conditions. Because water can be unexpectedly cold outside midsummer, and because there are hazards such as fluctuating water levels, boat traffic, sudden drop‑offs, and typically no lifeguards at many sites, swimmers are advised to use designated swim areas when available, wear flotation if uncertain, and observe local advisories for safety.
