** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Irondequoit Bay, an inlet off Lake Ontario near Rochester, New York, shows pronounced seasonal changes in water temperature. In winter the surface commonly approaches freezing, around 32°F (0°C) and can be colder under ice cover. Spring temperatures typically climb from the mid-30s to mid-50s °F (about 2–13°C) as the bay thaws and warms. By summer, shallow areas and sheltered coves often reach their warmest, generally between about 60–75°F (15–24°C), with late July and August usually the warmest months. In autumn the water cools again into the 40s–50s °F (4–13°C), dropping toward freezing as ice returns. Because the bay is connected to Lake Ontario and varies in depth, some spots remain cooler and respond more slowly to air temperatures than small inland ponds.
Swimming in and around Irondequoit Bay is possible in certain shoreline locations and at nearby public beaches, but there are few if any lifeguarded, designated swimming areas directly within the bay itself. Local authorities may post water-quality advisories, and boat traffic, currents near the inlet, variable depths, and colder temperatures outside midsummer make some areas unsuitable for casual swimming. For safety it is advisable to use managed public beaches when available, heed posted advisories, and be aware that swimming in the bay is often at one’s own risk rather than in supervised facilities.
