Horsey Mere, one of the shallow broads on the Norfolk Broads, typically runs cool through much of the year. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range from about 1–6 °C (34–43 °F) in winter, 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in spring, 15–22 °C (59–72 °F) in summer and 8–15 °C (46–59 °F) in autumn. There are no formal bathing facilities or lifeguards at the mere, and while informal swimming sometimes occurs, it is not actively promoted. Reed-lined margins, boat traffic, variable water quality and an occasional risk of algal blooms mean swimming is undertaken at people’s own risk and may be discouraged or temporarily restricted to protect both visitors and wildlife.
