Pennington Flash is a shallow inland reservoir and country park near Leigh in Greater Manchester. Water temperatures vary with the seasons: in winter the surface commonly sits around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), spring warms to roughly 6–14 °C (43–57 °F), summer can reach about 14–20 °C (57–68 °F), and autumn typically drops back toward 8–14 °C (46–57 °F). Because the flash is exposed and relatively shallow, temperatures can change quickly with weather and wind, and algae or runoff can affect water quality after heavy rain.
There is no designated, lifeguarded bathing area at Pennington Flash and swimming is generally not officially encouraged for safety reasons — boat and sailing traffic, hidden underwater hazards and variable water quality present risks. Nevertheless, organised watersports such as sailing and windsurfing take place, and some experienced wild swimmers visit at their own risk.
