** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Crystal Lake in Michigan typically shows strong seasonal variation in surface water temperature. In winter the surface often approaches freezing, around 32°F (0°C), and ice cover is common. Spring warming moves surface temperatures into the mid 30s to mid 50s °F (about 2–13°C) as the lake mixes. Summer surface temperatures in the clearest, deeper basins often range from about 65–75°F (18–24°C), though shallow bays and sheltered areas can warm to the high 70s or around 78–80°F (26–27°C) on hot, calm days; the deep parts of the lake, however, usually remain much cooler due to stratification and a thermocline. In autumn the surface cools back toward roughly 50–60°F (10–16°C) before ice forms again.
Swimming is generally allowed in Crystal Lake at public beaches and private shorelines during the warmer months, and it is a common recreational activity from late spring through early fall when temperatures are more comfortable. Caution is advised because the lake’s deep, cool water can produce chilly conditions even on warm days, increasing the risk of cold-water shock or fatigue. Local beach rules, lifeguard availability, water-quality advisories (for occasional algal blooms), and ice safety in winter determine when and where swimming is recommended or restricted.
