** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Northumberland
Colt Crag Reservoir, set in the upland countryside of Northumberland, holds cool water throughout the year. Typical surface temperatures range from about 0–5°C (32–41°F) in winter, 4–10°C (39–50°F) in spring, 12–18°C (54–64°F) in summer, and 6–12°C (43–54°F) in autumn. Because it is relatively shallow in places and exposed to northern weather, surface warmth in summer is modest and deeper water remains significantly colder, so conditions can feel brisk even on warm days.
Swimming at Colt Crag is generally discouraged and often not permitted because it is a working reservoir supplying water and can present hazards such as cold shock, submerged obstacles and limited rescue access. Many visitors instead enjoy walking, birdwatching and cycling around the reservoir and nearby Harwood Forest; the broader region also offers access to historic routes along Hadrian’s Wall, market towns such as Hexham and larger water recreation areas a short drive away.
