Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Buntzen Lake, located near Anmore in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, is a mountain reservoir surrounded by forested hills and part of BC Hydro’s hydroelectric system. Because of its elevation and cold inflows from surrounding creeks, the lake remains cool throughout most of the year. In early spring, the surface temperature is typically around 39–45°F (4–7°C) as snowmelt enters from higher elevations. By late May and June, the lake begins to warm, reaching about 52–59°F (11–15°C). During midsummer, from July through August, surface temperatures in shallow areas near the beaches can rise to around 63–68°F (17–20°C) on warm, sunny days. By late September, the water cools again, dropping below 55°F (13°C) as autumn weather returns.
Swimming in Buntzen Lake is allowed and very popular, especially at the two designated beach areas that include picnic facilities and roped-off swimming zones. The water, while cool, is exceptionally clear and refreshing, making it ideal for short swims on hot days. However, due to its depth and mountain-fed nature, the temperature can feel brisk even in midsummer, and extended swimming may lead to chill or fatigue. The best time for swimming is from late June through early September, when the air is warm and the surface water reaches its most comfortable temperature.
