Aursjøen is a highland reservoir in Møre og Romsdal, Norway, and its water temperatures reflect its mountain climate and regulated water levels. In winter the surface is typically at or below freezing and often ice-covered, around 0 °C (32 °F) or colder under the ice. During spring thaw temperatures usually remain very low, roughly 0–6 °C (32–43 °F). In early summer the lake commonly warms to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), while the warmest weeks of midsummer may see surface temperatures in the order of 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in sheltered bays on warm years. By autumn the water cools again, falling into the single digits, roughly 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), before refreezing.
Swimming in Aursjøen is physically possible but limited by cold temperatures, remoteness and reservoir-related hazards. Cold-water shock and rapid heat loss are real risks even in summer when surface temperatures are relatively low, and the lake’s status as a regulated reservoir can mean strong currents, sudden level changes near intakes and spillways, and steep or rocky shorelines. There are no widespread lifeguarded beaches, so if people choose to swim they should take precautions: avoid swimming alone, stay clear of outflow structures, consider a wetsuit, and be mindful of rapidly changing weather and water conditions.
