*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Arkabutla Lake, a reservoir in northwest Mississippi, experiences pronounced seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In winter months the lake often cools to roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C). Spring brings a steady warm-up, with surface temperatures commonly in the 50–70°F (10–21°C) range as air temperatures climb and sunlight increases. Summer is the warmest period: surface waters frequently reach the mid-70s to mid-80s°F (24–29°C) and can occasionally approach the low 90s°F (32°C) during extreme heat. In autumn the lake cools again, typically settling between about 55–75°F (13–24°C) as the season progresses.
Swimming in Arkabutla Lake is generally possible at public recreation areas, but conditions and rules vary by location. Many shorelines and campgrounds permit informal swimming, yet there are no widespread lifeguarded beaches and safety hazards—such as sudden drop-offs, submerged structure, boat traffic, and strong currents near the dam and spillways—mean caution is advised. Water quality can fluctuate after heavy rains, so visitors should observe posted signs and local guidance before entering the water. For safe recreational swimming, choose designated access points, avoid restricted zones near the dam and boat channels, and be prepared for cooler temperatures outside the peak summer months.
