** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Ara is a small inland lake in the former Østfold region of southeastern Norway. Like many lakes in this part of the country, its surface temperatures vary considerably through the year. In winter the water typically sits at or just above freezing, about 0–1 °C (32–34 °F) under the ice. During spring the surface warms into the single digits, roughly 4–10 °C (39–50 °F). By early to mid‑summer surface temperatures often reach a comfortable range of 16–20 °C (61–68 °F), and on warm, sunny late‑summer days the shallows can climb to around 22–24 °C (72–75 °F). These values depend on air temperature, depth, inflow and shading, so local conditions can produce cooler or warmer spots.
Swimming is generally possible and commonly practiced when conditions are favourable, particularly in late June through August when surface temperatures are warmest. Public access to shorelines in Norway is supported by the right of access (allemannsretten), but swimming may be restricted by private property, posted local rules, or temporary water‑quality advisories such as blue‑green algae warnings. Winter swimming or ice bathing is done by some but requires careful assessment of ice thickness and safety measures. As always, check local signage and municipal water‑quality information before entering the water.
