The Abereiddi Blue Lagoon, a flooded former slate quarry on the Pembrokeshire coast, is a popular and permitted spot for wild swimming. As it’s an ocean-fed pool, its temperature reflects that of the Atlantic, meaning it remains chilly year-round, even in summer. The water is typically between 8∘C (46∘F) in winter and a maximum of about 16∘C to 18∘C (61∘F to 64∘F) during peak summer months, making a wetsuit advisable for most.
Swimming is allowed here, and the lagoon's sheltered nature, surrounded by high cliffs, keeps the water calmer than the open sea, which makes it attractive for confident swimmers, coasteering groups, and kayakers. Visitors should note that the lagoon is very deep, around 25 meters. A key nearby attraction is the picturesque former fishing village of Porthgain, just a short walk along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which offers a pub and art galleries. The lagoon is sometimes closed to the public in autumn to protect breeding seals.
