Prienai (in Lithuanian - Prienai) lies along the Nemunas River and near several small lakes and reservoirs. Water temperatures in these inland waters vary by season: in winter surface temperatures typically fall to around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) and often the lakes are ice-covered; in spring they rise from roughly 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) as ice melts and the water stratifies; in summer average surface temperatures are commonly between 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), with short spells reaching 25–26 °C (77–79 °F) during heat waves; in autumn the surface cools to roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) as the weather turns cooler. Deeper water remains colder and changes more slowly than the surface.
