Water Temperature Trends
Apulia, located in southern Italy and surrounded by both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, offers warm and inviting waters along its extensive coastline. During the summer months, sea temperatures in this region range between 24 and 27°C (75 to 81°F), making it ideal for swimming and other water activities. Even in early autumn, the water remains warm, around 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F), providing an extended season for beachgoers. In the cooler months, the sea temperatures drop to approximately 15 to 18°C (59 to 64°F), which can still attract some brave swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.
The region's rivers, such as the Ofanto, are generally small and shallow, with temperatures varying depending on the season and proximity to the coast. In summer, river temperatures can reach around 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F), though they are not as popular for swimming as the sea. During spring and autumn, these waters cool to around 14 to 18°C (57 to 64°F), and in winter, they may drop further, making them less appealing for recreational use.
Apulia is not particularly known for large lakes, but smaller inland reservoirs and artificial lakes exist, with water temperatures that fluctuate seasonally. In summer, these lakes may warm to about 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F), while in the cooler months, they can drop to 12 to 16°C (54 to 61°F). While the lakes and rivers offer scenic spots for relaxation and hiking, the warm coastal waters remain the highlight of Apulia, drawing visitors to its sun-soaked beaches year-round.
